QUESTION: I am interested in Yoga and experiencing the positive effects of meditation and stretching. However, I had a lumbar fusion in November and would be starting at a slow pace. What types of classes do you recommend?
POSEMASTER'S ANSWER:
If you are brand new to yoga and start exploring the various schools
and systems of yoga, you will probably become confused very fast.
Yoga is a very vast subject and there are many many different ways of practicing it. Fortunately for you there are systems that specialize in working with people who have injuries and illnesses.
The system that I am certified in is called the Iyengar system. Named after the
man who developed this way to practice yoga, B.K.S. Iyengar.
Teachers who are certified in the Iyengar system are all trained to work with therapy students . Our system is very precise in regard to
the correct structure and internal actions of the yoga postures.
Many of are students are dealing with serious physical issues and come to this system of yoga to treat these injuries. And, of course the are other systems and teachers that can help you work safely, but you will have to be careful in selecting the right class and teacher. Read resumes of the teacher. Do they discuss anything about therapy in their bio's? And I notice we live in the same city. I also teach a yoga therapy class on Saturday mornings at one of the Iyengar yoga schools here and that would be the perfect way for you to start yoga.
Regarding the meditation. Most yoga classes are about the physical postures and there is just a few moments of concentration to begin the class. But once you get in a yoga environment you will find additional opportunities to practice sitting meditation. Good Luck and feel free to contact me again, kevin |
